Fairfield Spirit Halloween Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 6 Hurt

A shooting inside a Spirit Halloween store at a California shopping mall on the eve of Halloween left one woman dead and six other people wounded, and police said on Saturday that the gunman was still at large.

FAIRFIELD, California — Officers were called to the Spirit Halloween store inside Solano Town Center in Fairfield at about 8:30 p.m. local time on Friday, October 30 — 11:30 p.m. Eastern — after reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found seven people with gunshot wounds inside the seasonal costume shop, Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said.

One person died at the scene. The six surviving victims were taken to hospitals, and at least three of them were in critical condition on Saturday. Detectives described the store as a very active crime scene as they interviewed witnesses, reviewed mall surveillance video and worked to identify the person responsible.

On Saturday, Fairfield police identified the woman who died as Constance Hages, 31. Family members told detectives that Hages was pregnant at the time of her death, police said, adding that confirmation would come from the Solano County coroner. Police have not released the names of the six wounded victims.

What happened inside the store

The shooting took place inside the Spirit Halloween shop at Solano Town Center, a shopping centre with more than 130 stores and restaurants, which was busy on Friday night as shoppers made last-minute Halloween purchases.

Police said the gunfire was reported at about 8:30 p.m. local time. Officers found seven victims with gunshot wounds inside the store. One woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other six victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Fairfield police, assisted by Suisun City police and the California Highway Patrol, secured the mall and kept the store closed as a crime scene through Saturday. A Halloween trick-or-treating event planned at the mall for Saturday was cancelled after the shooting.

Victims and their conditions

In a Saturday update, Fairfield police gave the fullest account yet of the wounded. Three victims — a 16-year-old male, a 19-year-old male and a 32-year-old male — remained in critical condition. A 23-year-old man was also hospitalised in stable condition, police said.

Two other victims, a 19-year-old man and a 43-year-old man, were treated for gunshot wounds and released from hospital, according to police.

Police initially withheld the identity of the woman who died, pending notification of next of kin. That changed on Saturday afternoon, when the department named her as Constance Hages, 31. NationWire is reporting the pregnancy only as family members described it to police, because coroner confirmation was still pending.

Spirit Halloween said in a statement that it was cooperating with investigators and that the Fairfield store would not reopen out of respect for the victims.

The search for the suspect

As of Saturday evening, police had not announced an arrest and had not released a public description of a suspect. The shooter had left before officers arrived, according to early police accounts, and investigators said they were still establishing how many shots were fired and whether the attack extended beyond the Halloween store.

Based on preliminary information, Fairfield police said the shooting “is believed to have stemmed from a targeted incident involving one suspect” inside the store. Detectives are reviewing video and other evidence to identify the individual responsible, the department said.

Police also said they did not believe the public faced an ongoing threat, even as the investigation continued. The FBI’s Sacramento field office said it was aware of the shooting and was deploying its evidence response team to assist Fairfield police in processing the extensive crime scene.

Anyone with information, photographs or video from the mall has been asked to contact the Fairfield Police Department at 707-428-7600 or by email at [email protected].

A second shooting at a Spirit Halloween store in Michigan

Hours earlier on Friday, a separate shooting at another Spirit Halloween store, in Madison Heights, Michigan, left a 21-year-old man dead. Madison Heights police said the victim, a Detroit resident, had argued with another 21-year-old man he knew inside the store on John R Road, near Detroit, before the other man shot him multiple times at about 2:04 p.m. local time.

The victim was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Police in Madison Heights said they identified a person of interest, recovered a 9mm handgun believed to have been used, and took the suspected shooter into custody after bystanders assaulted him as officers moved in. He was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Madison Heights investigators said the two men were acquainted and that, based on the information available, they did not believe the Michigan shooting was a random act of violence. They said there was no known ongoing threat to public safety in that case, and they submitted their findings to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for a decision on potential charges.

Authorities have announced no connection between the Michigan and California cases. The arrest in Michigan does not resolve the California investigation, where the suspect remains unidentified.

What happens next

Fairfield detectives are expected to release further updates as witness interviews and video review progress, including any suspect description, a possible motive beyond the preliminary targeted-incident assessment, and updated conditions for the hospitalised victims.

NationWire will update this story as Fairfield police and the FBI release new information.
