Bed Bath & Beyond has opened its first standalone store since the original company collapsed into bankruptcy in 2023, marking the latest step in the home-goods brand’s return to American neighbourhoods. The 19,000-square-foot shop at 7580 W. Bell Road in Glendale, Arizona, opened its doors on Saturday, 7 November, with the brand’s famous 20%-off coupons back in circulation.

The opening is the first test of a standalone format for the revived brand, which has so far returned mainly through co-branded sites and its online store. Parent company Neighborhood Intelligence, Inc. (Nasdaq: NXH) announced the opening in a press release on 5 November, describing Glendale as “an important milestone” and saying more standalone stores would follow.

A familiar shop, refreshed

The Glendale store is merchandised by room and occasion, with the brand’s iconic towel wall, made beds, kitchen gadgets, storage and organisation ranges, and home décor. It also draws on The Container Store’s expertise in organisation, combining products customers remember with new ideas for every room in the home.

Saturday’s grand-opening celebrations included special promotions, giveaways and surprises throughout the day. Two customers were to find a $500 Bed Bath & Beyond gift card through specially designated direct-mail coupons, while the first 25 customers to make a purchase received a complimentary candle. Local radio station KISS FM 104.7 broadcast live from the store, with a DJ and giveaways including ten $100 gift cards.

The legendary 20%-off coupons are back too, the company said, with local residents receiving them through direct mail.

“Bed Bath & Beyond is a brand that generations of customers have welcomed into their homes, and we’re excited to bring it back to their neighborhoods,” said Amy Sullivan, President of Neighborhood Intelligence, Inc. “We’re bringing back the things customers have always loved, from the iconic shopping experience to the brands, products, and value they remember, while introducing new ways to help customers make the most of every room in their home. Glendale is an important milestone, and we’re just getting started.”

From bankruptcy to a neighbourhood comeback

The original Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy in 2023, and its stores closed as the brand’s assets were sold. Chain Store Age reported that the Glendale opening is the company’s first standalone store since that collapse, and that the new shop occupies a former Container Store location.

The brand now sits inside Neighborhood Intelligence, whose portfolio also includes The Container Store, BuyBuy Baby and Kirkland’s. The company says the brand has a renewed presence in more than 80 neighbourhood locations, including co-branded stores with The Container Store, alongside an online store at BedBathandBeyond.com.

The site carries a small irony: the former Container Store location there had been unprofitable at store level, Chief Executive Marcus Lemonis told analysts, according to Retail Dive. The parent company is betting the Bed Bath & Beyond name and its far broader assortment can make the same space work.

More standalone stores planned for 2027

Building on Glendale, Neighborhood Intelligence plans additional standalone stores in Minnesota, Florida and Mississippi in 2027. Those openings form part of the company’s broader “Everything Home” strategy, linking its retail brands, home services and home-ownership products through neighbourhood stores and digital shopping.

“Our stores are about more than a transaction. They’re about being part of the communities we serve,” Sullivan added. “We want customers to rediscover Bed Bath & Beyond, find the things they love, and have a reason to come back again and again.”

A cautious test for physical retail

The Glendale opening is a modest bet by the standards of American retail, but it is a closely watched one. Physical retail has proved unforgiving for chains that expand too fast, and the standalone format will be judged on whether shoppers keep returning once the opening-day giveaways are over.

The wider backdrop is mixed. Berkshire Hathaway’s operating profit fell in the third quarter even as its cash pile hit a record $377 billion. Consumer-goods shoppers have also had safety news to follow: Bose recalled 670,000 speaker batteries over a fire risk. And the Nasdaq bounced 1.1% on Friday as chip stocks recovered from a sharp sell-off, a reminder of how quickly sentiment can turn.

The company’s own numbers point to momentum: its quarterly filing records third-quarter revenue of $509.3 million, against $257.2 million a year earlier, and it forecasts 2027 consolidated revenue of $2 billion to $2.1 billion, with gross margins of 33% to 34%. The filing cautions that the figures are unaudited and not necessarily indicative of a full year.

Whether Glendale becomes the first of many standalone stores, or a one-off experiment, will depend on the tills. The store is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
