Two Dead After Shooting at Tampa Citibank Campus

Two people are dead, including the gunman, after a shooting at Citibank Center near Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday afternoon, 4 November 2026. A Citibank security guard shot the suspect dead minutes after the first shots were fired, ending the attack in an outdoor plaza where workers had been eating lunch.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting began shortly after midday at the sprawling banking complex in Brandon, about nine miles north-east of downtown Tampa. At 12:11 p.m. Eastern Time, deputies received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired in the building’s plaza, according to Chief Deputy Frank Losat.

What happened in the plaza

According to the sheriff’s office, a man drove a car into an outdoor seating area where people were eating lunch, then got out of the vehicle and shot a woman. The woman was later pronounced dead. The sheriff’s office has not released the identities of the woman or the gunman, and it has not said whether the two knew each other.

Within a few minutes, a Citibank security guard confronted the gunman and shot him. “The security guard that’s employed by CitiBank stopped the threat,” Losat told reporters at a mid-afternoon news conference. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other people were hurt and taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Sheriff Chad Chronister said on social media that he believed the shooting was a targeted incident, and deputies later said there was no continuing threat to the public. A motive has not yet been released, and the investigation is continuing.

A campus of thousands, evacuated in lines

The Citibank campus in suburban Tampa includes four three-storey office buildings that house thousands of employees. About 3,200 people were in the building at the time of the shooting, Losat said, and television footage showed long lines of workers streaming out of the buildings as deputies cleared them room by room.

More than 360 deputies swarmed the campus, the sheriff’s office said. Reuters reported that 365 deputies had responded. The sheriff’s office said in a social media post that it had “responded to an active threat and is currently clearing the building.”

The scale of the response reflected both the size of the site and the early uncertainty. In its first account, the Associated Press reported that it was not immediately known whether anyone else had been injured; the sheriff’s office later confirmed the four additional injuries. That sequence is a reminder that early casualty figures in fast-moving incidents can change as police check buildings and hospitals.

What remains unknown

Investigators have not yet said what weapon was used, how the gunman gained access to the plaza, or whether he worked at the campus. Losat declined to comment when asked if the suspect and the victim knew each other, and he did not say whether the guard who intervened was injured.

The case comes as police forces across the United States continue to grapple with shootings in workplaces and other public places. While violent crime fell across the United States in 2025, according to a Justice Department survey reported earlier by NationWire, local incidents of this kind still leave families, colleagues and entire campuses shaken long after the immediate danger has passed.

Citibank has not yet issued a detailed public statement about the shooting beyond cooperating with deputies, and the sheriff’s office said further updates would follow as investigators interview witnesses and review security footage. In a separate recent case, the capture of a Tennessee prison escapee after a nine-day manhunt ended with an arrest in Missouri. Here, by contrast, the decisive intervention came from a guard already on site.

For the workers who walked out of Citibank Center in long lines on Wednesday afternoon, the questions that remain are personal as much as procedural: who the victims were, why this plaza was chosen, and what, if anything, could have stopped it sooner. Deputies have asked anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
